STATEMENT Regarding Secretary Ryan Zinke’s Unexpected Visit to SHOT Show in Las Vegas

25 Jan STATEMENT Regarding Secretary Ryan Zinke’s Unexpected Visit to SHOT Show in Las Vegas

Interior Secretary spends more time with gun manufacturers than with local stakeholders during 2017 sham monument review visit to Nevada

LAS VEGAS – Today, Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke made an appearance at the annual gun industry convention, SHOT Show in Las Vegas. Zinke began posting from his official Twitter account at 7:11 a.m. Department of the Interior Deputy Secretary David Bernhardt made an appearance at SHOT Show on January 23rd. This means that leaders from the Department of the Interior spent more time at SHOT Show than visiting Nevada’s National Monuments that were under review in 2017.

Andy Maggi, Executive Director of the Nevada Conservation League:

“It was shocking to learn on Twitter today that Secretary Ryan Zinke was visiting Southern Nevada at the 2018 SHOT Show,” said Andy Maggi, Executive Director of the Nevada Conservation League. “Shocking because in the shadow of the recent release of the Bundys, once again, Secretary Zinke has come to Southern Nevada and failed to schedule time with proponents and supporters of Gold Butte National Monument despite his recommendations that the administration reduce its size.

“If Secretary Zinke is going to travel to Southern Nevada he should at least have the courage to face the overwhelming opposition to his recommendations and answer questions from the Monuments defenders. Zinke should especially have the courage to hold meetings with the tribal communities and local elected officials he ignored during his half-day trip to our state.

“To our knowledge, he has no plans to make these visits and on other trips has only spent time with those who favor undoing the monument.”

Annette Magnus, Executive Director of Battle Born Progress:

“This unexpected visit by Secretary Zinke is troubling and an insult to our community on so many levels. To have Zinke travel to Las Vegas for SHOT Show is concerning and leaves us wanting answers,” said Annette Magnus, Executive Director of Battle Born Progress. “Did Zinke travel here on government time and are taxpayers paying for the Secretary of the Interior to hang out with extreme NRA conspiracy theorists? Did Zinke get here on a private plane, and who paid for that? Is Zinke at SHOT Show as Secretary of the Interior or as a shareholder of gun manufacturer, PROOF Inc?

“Why does Zinke prefer to spend his time with the NRA and gun manufacturers and ignore the Nevadans that have been begging to meet with him on Gold Butte and Basin and Range National Monuments? We wonder what Congressional District 4 candidate, Cresent Hardy thinks about all of this since those monuments are in that district?

“So far, at the time of this statement, Zinke and his department have spent more time at SHOT Show than he did with tribal leaders, public land advocates, and other Nevadans during his half-day Nevada visit during his sham review of national monuments.

“This is infuriating and unacceptable. Instead of spending his time at a gun convention that has done nothing to help victims of the Route 91 shooting, Zinke should try to do his job and finally speak to the Nevadans he has ignored.”
