Nevada remembers gun violence victims and survivors on 2-year anniversary of the Route 91 mass shooting 

Las Vegas, NV – Today marks the two year anniversary of the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history. 

Annette Magnus, Executive Director of Battle Born Progress released the following statement:

“Two years have passed since our Las Vegas community was changed forever by the deadliest mass shooting in our nation’s modern history. But the mass shootings in Gilroy, El Paso, Dayton, and Odessa/Midland, along with the other 280 mass shootings that have occurred just this year, have reminded us that we still have a long way to go to end gun violence. No community should have to experience what we Nevadans went through that night, but sadly, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell seems intent to let the carnage and heartbreak continue as long as the gun lobby lines his and his colleagues’ pockets. Despite the House passing bipartisan background check legislation earlier this year, not a single hearing or vote on the bill has been scheduled in the Senate to date.

While McConnell does the gun lobby’s bidding in Congress, here in Nevada, we’re blessed to have strong leaders in our state like Assemblywoman Sandra Jauregui, who harnessed her trauma as a survivor of the Route 91 shooting to find the courage to sponsor sweeping gun violence prevention legislation this legislative session with her bill Assembly Bill 291. We’re also proud that Governor Steve Sisolak and the Nevada Legislature carried out the will of the voters and voted to support and sign legislation to expand background checks, something that should have happened years ago under his predecessor. It’s a testament to the #VegasStrong community we have forged in the aftermath of this tragedy that Nevadans went to the ballot box in 2018 and said enough was enough. We will continue fighting for the nation to do the same.”
