Battle Born Progress Statement on the 49th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade

Abortion rights hang by a thread as the anti-abortion extremists and Supreme Court continue chipping away at Roe

LAS VEGAS, NV – Today, is the 49th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court decision that provided pregnant people in the United States with the constitutional right to abortion.

Annette Magnus, Executive Director of Battle Born Progress, said,

“Today is an important day to remember and celebrate the decision of Roe v. Wade that made abortion a constitutional right across this country. It is a bittersweet anniversary because ongoing attacks on abortion rights have left this decision hanging by a thread. Overturning protections for pregnant individuals established by Roe v. Wade will deny millions of people access to health care that they need over the coming decades. With at least five justices on the Supreme Court that appear willing to overturn Roe v. Wade, the 49th anniversary could be its last. That’s why the work that we’ve done in Nevada to ensure abortion is safe and legal, was crucial. Nevadans can rest assured that if and when Roe falls, their abortion rights still stand in Nevada.

It’s more important than ever to protect abortion care and ensure that everyone can make personal healthcare decisions that have a tremendous impact on their futures and their families. While we have made progress in Nevada, several far-right MAGA faction candidates running for office in 2022 have extreme anti-abortion views and openly threaten to undo the progress we’ve made. In particular, Senate candidate Adam Laxalt spent his time as Nevada’s Attorney General enjoining lawsuits in other states aimed at restricting abortion access. Gubernatorial hopeful, Dean Heller, famously flip-flopped on federal funding for Planned Parenthood while in the Senate, and voted to confirm two of Donald Trump’s nominees to the Supreme Court, either of whom may be the deciding vote in the ruling that guts Roe. Today, we remind Laxalt, Heller, and the other candidates that Nevada is a pro-choice, pro-abortion state, and we will be here every step of the way to remind them of that fact and we will ensure that the right to an abortion is protected and access to services is expanded.

Nationally, instead of taking away our freedoms and rights, the Supreme Court should uphold this important precedent, and Congress should act to codify Roe into law. No matter where we live, what we look like, or how much money we have, each of us is better equipped to decide personal healthcare decisions for ourselves than a judge or justice. SCOTUS’ job is to uphold the law of the land, not to weaken our Constitutional liberties to serve their own political agenda.”
