Battle Born Progress Joins Celebration of Historic Gun Violence Prevention Legislation

NEVADA – Today, President Biden and gun violence prevention champions celebrated the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which was signed on June 25, 2022. This bill is a historic accomplishment that will provide funding for Extreme Risk Protection Order implementation, enhance background checks for buyers under 21, and disarm domestic abusers. This is a first step toward ensuring common sense gun violence prevention policy moves forward. Battle Born Progress Executive Director, Annette Magnus was in attendance for the signing.

“It was an honor to join President Biden and gun violence prevention champions to celebrate the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. Like Biden said, with great rights come great responsibilities and we are proud to see the fruits of people across the country taking on the gun lobby and continuing to fight for safer communities. This legislation provides for various measures to make our country safer. Providing support for Extreme Risk Protection Orders will help reduce acts of mass violence and suicides committed with a firearm. Nevada led on this policy by enacting AB291 in the 2019 Nevada legislative session,” said Annette Magnus, Executive Director of Battle Born Progress.

“In addition, this bill closes the domestic abuser loophole by expanding existing law to include dating partners. We know that guns are used in over half of all intimate partner homicides. Closing this loophole will save lives. Finally, enhancing background checks for buyers under 21 gives us an opportunity to catch issues that might precipitate future violence. Given the recent tragedies we have seen in Uvalde, Brooklyn, and most recently, Highland Park, we need to do everything we can to limit access to firearms for prohibited people. We are grateful that both Nevada Senators supported this bill.”

“Even though this bill is a significant accomplishment, it is our belief that we must do more to end gun violence. We can ban assault weapons or change the purchase age of these weapons. We can implement federal universal background checks. We can prioritize mental health resources for people who are struggling. This is not a one size fits all solution. It is our responsibility to look at available policy solutions to protect our communities. Responsible gun owners, including myself, support common sense measures. It’s time for Republicans to stop catering to the gun lobby and start listening to Americans.”
