Capital Improvements Bill Passes Despite Republican Obstruction

It is now up to Gov. Lombardo whether he’ll side with Nevada’s veterans or “pork” for charter schools

CARSON CITY, NV – This evening, Governor Joe Lombardo issued a proclamation calling Nevada legislators back to Carson City to address the Capital Improvements Budget. Yesterday, with less than an hour left of the regular Legislative Session, Nevada Senators failed to reach a two-thirds majority to pass this budget, after Senate Minority Leader Heidi Seevers-Gansert stated her party would not be voting for the measure. However, during this evening’s special session, both houses approved Assembly Bill 1, a bill identical to the original Capital Improvements Budget from the 82nd Legislative Session, less than 24 hours later.

Legislators approved Assembly Bill 1 within two hours to fund capital improvements for the Department of Corrections, the Department of Health & Human Services, Offices of the Military, the Department of Public Safety, and more within our state.

Annette Magnus, Executive Director of Battle Born Progress, said:

“The Capital Improvements Budget is a critical piece of legislation that directly affects the lives and well-being of the citizens of Nevada and we’re glad it finally passed the legislature. The rushed nature of the special session was caused by the eleventh-hour obstructionism and political games from Republicans just 24 hours ago. Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro and Speaker Steve Yeager have worked consistently to compromise and negotiate with Governor Lombardo and Republicans. These negotiations were met with underhanded tactics and partisan politics on the part of Republicans.”

“We commend Majority Leader Cannizzaro and Speaker Yeager for quickly and decisively working to pass Assembly Bill 1 to fund capital improvements in the Silver State. This bill, while it is the same measure Republicans voted against just 24 hours ago, will make much-needed improvements for the Department of Corrections, the Department of Health & Human Services, Offices of the Military for maintenance projects, the Department of Public Safety, and more. It is disheartening that Governor Joe Lombardo and Republicans could not get their act together last night to prevent a special session.”

“Further, we call on Governor Lombardo and the leadership of the Nevada Legislature to not entertain the idea of a 35th Special Session to give away public money for yet another stadium scam that will not benefit Nevadans and steal more dollars away from our public schools, housing, and vital programs that our neighbors rely on. One special session due to Republicans playing politics with our state is enough. Nevadans do not need or deserve to go through another special session that addresses funding for yet another stadium.”
