Nevada groups to host press call with local and national experts to honor the 81st Anniversary of Social Security
Las Vegas – On Wednesday, August 17th, Battle Born Progress and Nevada Alliance for Retired Americans will join together with experts on the issue to host a press call in celebration of the 81st anniversary of Social Security.
In addition to celebrating the program’s longstanding history of protecting American seniors, the call will explore how the next president could impact the stability of the historic legislation. During their convention, the Republican party adopted a party platform that includes making drastic cuts to the program. Tomorrow Vice Presidential candidate Mike Pence will be making a stop in Henderson, Nevada and we are calling on him to distance himself from this extreme agenda that hurts all Nevadans.
Local politicians like Congressman Joe Heck have called Social Security “a pyramid scheme.” Heck’s plan means billions more for Wall Street, and they’ve donated over half a million dollars to his campaign. We are calling on all candidates, including Heck, to understand that Nevadans expect our Social Security to be protected, and that it must be made a top priority. We must call attention to the fact that Heck’s rhetoric in the past on this issue is alarming and is something that should not be ignored.
“It is critically important that people know that our system that we have paid into our whole lives will be there for us when we need it,” said Tom Bird, President of the Nevada Alliance of Retired Americans. “This call to action for older Americans who could potentially be impacted by Donald Trump and republican policies that deprive seniors of earned benefits.”
