Extreme Supreme Court Decision Strikes Down New York Concealed Carry Law Changing the Course of Gun Violence Policy

NEVADA – Today a conservative majority in the United States Supreme Court voted 6-3 to strike down a New York law enacted in 1911 that required “proper cause” be shown for the concealed carry of handguns outside of the home. The Court’s decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Kevin P. Bruen, Superintendent of the New York State Police will inevitably lead to more guns on the street and likely more violence.

“As a gun owner I am horrified by the extreme decision from the Supreme Court that invalidates New York’s concealed carry law. However, I am not surprised. The gun lobby is committed to having more guns available despite the heartbreaking consequences we see from gun violence in communities across the country everyday,” said Annette Magnus, Executive Director of Battle Born Progress.

“The evidence is clear that a “good guy with a gun” is not a safer option nor does it eliminate gun violence. According to the Violence Policy Center, since May 2007 there have been 2,240 people killed by individuals with a concealed carry permit, 37 mass shootings committed by individuals with a concealed carry permit and 24 law enforcement officers killed by individuals with a concealed carry permit. This Supreme Court decision further ties the hands of advocates and policy makers who are working to solve the gun violence epidemic in the United States.”

Historically the Supreme Court has interpreted the Second Amendment, and even the 2008 Heller decision, as supporting the constitutionality of a variety of reasonable gun laws, many of which have been law for decades. The current decision upends this idea, demonstrating the extreme nature of former President Trump’s judicial appointees and the direction of the court. Americans and Nevadans overwhelmingly support common sense gun laws. In spite of this, the gun lobby and the Supreme Court continue to show they are out of touch with the American people, which has far reaching implications that will impact communities and families for decades.”

“Candidates for office in Nevada like Adam Laxalt cheered on the Supreme Court’s decision today because their radical party continues to promote a reckless and dangerous agenda pertaining to guns in this country. We will work to ensure Nevadans know where all candidates stand and continue to push for policies that keep communities safe from gun violence.”
