Supreme Court Ends Historically Regressive Term with Severe Hindrance of Clean Air Rules

NEVADA – This morning, the Supreme Court of the United States issued an opinion in a case regarding the Environmental Protection Agency, limiting the power of the Agency to regulate emissions from fossil fuel producing energy sources.

“Today the Supreme Court chose corporate polluters and profit over the survivability of our planet,” said Annette Magnus, Executive Director of Battle Born Progress. “Everyone needs clean air to breathe, but today’s ruling strips away authority of the EPA to curtail dangerous greenhouse gas emissions that threaten the health of entire communities, but also contribute to the escalating crisis caused by climate change. The latest data convincingly shows that Black, Indiginous, and communities of color face harsher impacts of air pollution and the resulting changes to our climate. In the same week that the Court ended the constitutional right to abortion, and created a new constitutional right to carry guns anywhere at anytime, it seems only fitting that this extreme far-right majority would upend our nation’s ability to respond to the existential threat of climate change. This past week of decisions makes the clearest case yet for aggressive court reform to address the far-right, pro-death agenda being undemocratically forced upon all of us. Furthermore, it shows why states like Nevada can and must be leaders on curbing air pollution and shifting towards a sustainable future, something that Governor Sisolak has spearheaded in office. His Trump-endorsed opponent, Joe Lombardo, directly threatens that effort and will leave vulnerable communities at the mercy of polluting corporations.”
