SCOTUS Holds 50 Years of Abortion Access in the Balance in Critical Mississippi Case

NEVADA – This morning, the Supreme Court of the United States heard oral arguments in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health. The case concerns a Mississippi law banning abortion after 15 weeks, giving the highest court the power to roll back 50 years of legal access to abortion if the law is upheld, and severely weakening the historic precedent set by Roe v. Wade.

“Access to safe and affordable abortion care is under attack in America,” Maria-Teresa Liebermann-Parraga, Deputy Director of Battle Born Progress, said. “Obtaining an abortion should not depend on which state you live in, nor should the views of partisan, anti-abortion extremists stand between you and your own health care decisions. The Court has one valid move in this case; affirm the Constitutional right to an abortion as it has for over 50 years since Roe v. Wade. Failure to do this will result in millions of Americans losing access to the care they deserve. Moreover, denying people abortion, or restricting access, leads to financial hardship, mental and physical stress and worse health outcomes, not just for the individual seeking the abortion, but for their existing children as well.

Rather than take healthcare away from people, the Supreme Court, the President and Congress should be taking steps to protect rights and expand access to critical health services, including reproductive health services and maternal health. We’re lucky that Nevada, under Governor Sisolak, has moved to protect this right. But the state of Mississippi has explicitly asked the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade. If that happens, 26 other states could move to ban abortion, despite 80% of Americans supporting legal abortion. We must not get complacent and hope for the far-right majority on the SCOTUS to do the right thing. The Senate must pass the Women’s Health Protection Act and for all lawmakers at all levels of government to ensure everyone can make their own health care decisions without political interference.
