Battle Born Progress Applauds Proposed Biden Administration Rules On Student Loan Debt Relief For Millions Of Americans

LAS VEGAS, NV –The Biden White House today announced a new plan that, if finalized in its current form, would provide student loan debt relief to 30 million borrowers nationwide. That relief is targeted to some of the most in-need borrowers, especially those who have carried their debt for years or who have faced the compounding burden of high-interest loan balances. 

That includes allowing borrowers, regardless of income, to cancel up to $20,000 in interest, and allowing some borrowers to have all of their interest forgiven – a plan that could impact 25 million borrowers – more than half of all Americans with outstanding student loan debt. 

Shelbie Swartz, Battle Born Progress Executive Director, issued the following statement: 

 “We applaud today’s proposal from the Biden Administration, which – if finalized as-is – would lift the heavy burden of student loan debt off the shoulders of millions of hard-working Americans, including some right here in Nevada. For too long, too many members of the middle class have been saddled with exorbitant and outrageous college costs that have not just outpaced inflation, but have set back a generation and held back our economy. The American middle class was built on the promise of a system of colleges and universities better than any in the world. But the right to a high-quality higher education should be for everyone, not only for the privileged few who can afford six-figure tuition. President Biden’s proposals begin to make good on that promise. Despite obstruction by Republicans, the President continues looking for ways to remedy the harsh economic burdens faced by millions of people in the United States. We applaud his dedication and call on Republicans to support these efforts.”
