Las Vegas, Nev. — Today, the Supreme Court ruled that President Biden’s landmark student loan forgiveness program was not allowed under the HEROES Act. The court ruled 6-3 with Justice Kagan, Justice Sotomayor, and Justice Jackson dissenting. This decision has significant implications for millions of student loan borrowers including thousands in Nevada.

“We strongly condemn the Supreme Court decision to reverse President Biden’s Student Loan Forgiveness Plan. This devastating ruling will cause millions of hardworking students across the country to lose out on the much-needed relief they were promised,” said Annette Magnus, Executive Director of Battle Born Progress. “President Biden’s Student Loan Forgiveness Plan aimed to provide relief to countless students burdened by exorbitant student loan debt, offering them a chance to rebuild their lives without the suffocating weight of financial obligations. This initiative was a beacon of hope for those struggling to make ends meet, and it represented a significant step toward creating a more equitable and just society.”

“An estimated 40 million people would qualify for loan forgiveness under President Biden’s plan. This historic investment would have helped individuals purchase a home, keep up on rent or assist with paying for needed prescriptions. Now, these individuals will continue struggling to afford basic necessities while also being strapped with significant debt that they were promised would be forgiven. We call on President Biden to do everything in his power to deliver for students and families being burdened by high levels of student loan debt. This was not a handout, it was a hand-up that would have helped our economy just as much as it would have helped individuals. It is shameful that we continue prioritizing profits for corporations and wealthy people while we watch the most vulnerable in our society struggle to make ends meet.”
